AFTER CONSTANTIN BRANCUSI (ROMANIAN-FRENCH 1876-1957) Mlle Pogany II, 1981 (cast) polished bronze, on a black base height: 28 cm (11 in.); height with base: 37 cm (14 1/2 in.) with cast signature 'C. Brancusi' lower reverse; inscribed with edition no. 52/250 PROVENANCE Museum Collections, Inc., Greenwich, Connecticut Robert W. Kurtz, Houston, Texas, acquired from the above in 1981 Private Collection Accompanied by the original order confirmation, packing slip and correspondence from Museum Collections, Inc., 1981 LOT NOTES Constantin Brancusi met the Hungarian painter Margit Pogány in Paris in 1910, and the portrait she inspired became one of the defining images of modern sculpture. Carving a first marble from memory after her return to Budapest, Brancusi revisited the subject repeatedly, distilling her features into a smooth ovoid head with vast almond eyes, an arched brow and hands drawn up beneath the chin. The 1920 bronze version of Mlle Pogany II was acquired by the Albright Art Gallery (now the Buffalo AKG Art Museum) in 1927. This authorized replica, cast in polished bronze in an edition of 250, was issued by Museum Collections, Inc., a Time Incorporated company, in 1981. Keywords: After Brancusi, Mlle Pogany II, Polished Bronze Sculpture, Modernist Bronze Head, Constantin Brancusi, Museum Collections Replica N.B. Condition reports are available upon request.
