* National CARTOONISTS SOCIETY 9 ARTIST JAM PAGE 19-1950 — A “collector’s item” and, in my opinion, an unusual illustration from the 1950s featuring superb self-portraits and drawings by a group of nine artists: Alex Raymond, Milton Caniff, Ernie Bushmiller, Raeburn Van Buren, Irving Novick, Michael Berry, Russell Patterson, Jay Alan, and Bill Dyer. “All the sketches were created during the National Cartoonists Society’s annual outing... Shawnee-on-Delaware, PA, hosted by Fred Waring.” No specific date is given, but the inclusion of Princess Snowflower dates it to 1949 at the earliest, as that is when she was introduced in the *Steve Canyon* series. This piece is particularly interesting given that each artist interprets the model posing in the upper left in their own style, much like an artist in his studio “sketching” his model. The illustration is executed in ink and watercolor on Bristol board, measuring 53.8 x 39.3 cm.
