C. TURNER (*1773) after HALLS (*1776), Portrait of Thomas Twining, mezzotint Charles Turner (1773, Woodstock, Oxfordshire – 1857, London) after John James Halls (1776 – 1834): Portrait of Thomas Twining. Portrait of a pensive older man in half-profile, 19th century, mezzotint Technique: Mezzotint on paper Inscription: Signed in the lower part of the printing plate: “J.J. Halls pinx. | C. Turner sculp.”; inscribed in the lower middle of the printing plate: “The Rev.d Thomas Twining A.M.” Date: 19th century Description: A half-length portrait of Thomas Twining facing left, wearing a white powdered wig and a dark, high-necked frock coat. This fine mezzotint print was made by Charles Turner after a painting by John James Halls and published on January 11, 1805. Twining was an Anglican clergyman and scholar—a member of the famous Twining family of tea merchants—and was known for his translations and his commitment to classical education. The depiction is simple and focuses entirely on the sitter’s calm, educated demeanor. Keywords: Thomas Twining; portrait; mezzotint; 19th century; Charles Turner; John James Halls; clergyman; Anglican Church; scholar; Enlightenment; classical education; history of tea; Great Britain; 1800s; male portrait; 19th century; Classicism; Portraits; United Kingdom; Size: Paper: 50.4 cm x 40.3 cm (19.8 x 15.9 in), Plate: 34.8 cm x 24.0 cm (13.7 x 9.4 in), Image: 27.9 cm x 23.5 cm (11 x 9.3 in) Condition: In fairly good condition. The sheet shows slight discoloration due to its age and a few faint smudges along the right margin. The corners are bumped, especially the bottom right corner. The right margin is somewhat creased, and there is a rounded crease at the bottom center, outside the image. The print is minimally smudged along the lower edge, but the main motif is intact. The portrait is clearly recognizable and detailed, with a few scattered scratches in the background on the right.
