J. DORNER (*1775) after EKEMAN-ALLESSON (*1790), A Break by the River Near a Mill, Lithograph Johann Jakob von Dorner Jr. (1775 Munich – 1852 ibid.) after Lorenz Ekeman-Allesson (c. 1790 Malmö – c. 1828 Stuttgart): Rest by the River at a Mill, 19th century, lithograph Technique: Lithography on tinted stone on paper Inscription: Signed on the stone below the image with “Dorner pinx. | J.G. Z | L. Ekemann del.” Date: 19th century Description: Johann Jakob Dorner the Younger (1775, Munich – 1852, ibid.) learned the arts and crafts from his father and, in his early years, initially focused on etchings and lithographs. Influenced by his father’s artistic body of work, however, he also devoted himself intensively to landscape painting and, together with renowned artists such as Johann Georg von Dillis and Wilhelm von Kobell, formed an early school of Munich landscape painting. This lithograph after Dorner depicts a romantic view of a gently flowing mountain river, where a rider has led his two horses and the dog accompanying him to water. In front of the gently rising, wooded hills in the background and next to a small drop in the river stands a remarkable building featuring interesting hydraulic engineering. Starting at the drop, the water is channeled over a wooden footbridge—like an aqueduct—to a waterwheel on the side of the building. A small weir is provided to regulate the flow of water. Inside the building next to the waterwheel and aqueduct, a mill or hammer mill could be seen here. The smoke rising from the chimney likely indicates the latter. Hammer forges—where heavy hammers are lifted using water power to assist a blacksmith in his strenuous work—were still widespread in southern Germany during the industrial era. Keywords: Nature, Mill, Water mill, Resting, Horses, 19th century, Romanticism, Landscape, Germany, Size: Paper: 34.8 cm x 43.2 cm (13.7 x 17 in), Image: 25.6 cm x 29.9 cm (10.1 x 11.8 in) Condition: Good condition. There is age-related discoloration and light foxing, especially along the sheet margins. In the upper part of the image, there are a few small spots. The edges are untrimmed and slightly bumped in places. Isolated, minimal marginal tears are present.
