Date: c. 1750 Description: Fort Kastela, also known as Benteng Kastela, is a ruin of a Portuguese fort on the southwest coast of Ternate. It is considered the first colonial fort built in the Spice Islands (Maluku) in Indonesia. The Portuguese built it in 1522. The fortress has different names in different languages such as São João Baptista de Ternate or Fortaleza de Ternate in Portuguese, Ciudad del Rosario in Spanish and Gammalamma in Ternate and Dutch. Nowadays the area is known as Kastella or Kastela.
