R. VINKELES (1741–1816), Mythical Creatures on a Taut Net, 1780, Etching Reinier Vinkeles (1741 Amsterdam – 1816 ibid.): Mythical Creatures on a Taut Net: The Raven, the Gazelle, the Tortoise, and the Rat in a Wooded Mythical Scene, 1780, Etching Technique: Etching on paper Print Quality: An absolutely superb, well-balanced print with crisp lines and good black density. Inscription: Signed in the printing plate at the lower left: “Vinkeles, del. et sculp.” At the lower part, inscribed in the printing plate: “LE CORBEAU, LA GAZELLE, LA TORTUE ET LE RAT. à M.e de la Sablière. Fab. CCXXVIII. 2.e PL.". Date: 1780 Description: In a wooded setting, a net is stretched between two tree trunks, trapping a gazelle. Perched on a branch to the left, a raven sits with its head bowed, observing the scene. To the right, a small rat is climbing up the trunk; a tortoise lies on the ground in front of it. Dense hatching renders the bark, foliage, and soil, while the light-colored background opens up the central space. The composition directs the viewer’s gaze toward the net as the narrative center. The animals appear as characters in a fable; the relationship between danger, help, and cunning is brought to life through their positions.
