R. VINKELES (1741–1816), The Matron of Ephesus, 1781, Etching Reinier Vinkeles (1741 Amsterdam – 1816 ibid.): The Matron of Ephesus The Matron of Ephesus in a tomb-like rock-cut structure, 1781, Etching Technique: Etching on paper Print Quality: An absolutely superb, harmonious print with crisp, well-defined lines and a well-balanced black tone. Inscription: Signed in the printing plate at the lower left: “Vinkeles, del. et sculp.” At the lower part, inscribed in the printing plate: “LA MATRONE D’EPHESE. Fable CCXLIII.” Date: 1781 Description: Within a rectangular picture area, a grotto- or tomb-like structure is depicted. Two female figures in long robes are shown: one sits slumped on the floor on the left, her head bowed, her arms in her lap; the other is kneeling on a step on the right, turning toward a stone plinth with a flaming lamp in a sweeping gesture. Rock faces and masonry frame the scene, while a bright opening provides a view into the background. Delicate, dense hatching renders space, fabric, and gesture; strong chiaroscuro contrasts emphasize the theatrical action and the isolation of the figures. The depiction has a narrative and moralizing quality.
