R. VINKELES (1741–1816), *The Lion and the Hunter*, 1769, etching Reinier Vinkeles (1741, Amsterdam – 1816, ibid.): The Lion and the Hunter The Lion and the Hunter, a fable scene featuring shepherds, sheep, and lions in a rocky landscape, 1769, etching Technique: Etching on paper Print Quality: A good, clear print with delicate lines and well-balanced black levels. Inscription: Signed in the printing plate at the lower left: “Vinkeles, del. et sculp.” At the bottom, inscribed in the printing plate: “LE LION ET LE CHASSEUR. Fable CV.” Date: 1769 Description: Within a rectangular frame, a fable-like scene rendered in delicate lines unfolds against a rocky landscape. On the right, a hunter with a shotgun and a wide-brimmed hat is retreating in fear; on the left, a second man sits on the ground, his arm raised in a defensive gesture. Several sheep stand between them. On a rocky outcrop above, a lion appears, its head facing the viewer. Trees, distant mountains, and a small structure create a sense of depth in the scene. Uniform hatching renders the ground, rocks, and sky; dense dark areas on the left contrast with the light in the distance on the right. The lines of sight converge on the hunter, the seated shepherd, and the lion, forming the dramatic center of the narrative.
