R. VINKELES (1741–1816), Education, 1773, Etching Reinier Vinkeles (1741 Amsterdam – 1816 ibid.): Education L'Éducation, a fable scene featuring a boy and two dogs in a courtyard, 1773, Etching Technique: Etching on paper Print Quality: An absolutely superb, harmonious print, with delicate, clear lines. Inscription: Signed in the printing plate at the lower left: “Vinkeles, del. et sculp.”; inscribed in the printing plate at the bottom: “L’ÉDUCATION. Fable CLXVI.” Date: 1773 Description: In a walled courtyard, a boy in a knee-length tunic and cap stands next to two dogs, holding a riding crop aloft. One dog is standing with its front paws on a barrel, eating from a bowl, while the other is looking sideways at the viewer. On the left, a bench, a jug, bowls, and vats stand in front of a house wall and a fence; in the background, an alleyway, houses, and a pointed church tower come into view. The composition clearly distinguishes between the foreground, middle ground, and background. Delicate parallel hatching, cross-hatching, and dense lines give form to the architecture, tree, and animals. The scene has an instructive quality; the gestures and the title allude to discipline and upbringing.
