Russel pinx. | R. Houston fecit". Inscribed in the lower part of the printing plate: "The Reverend John Ryland, A.M.". Date: 1775 Description: A half-length portrait in an oval frame, turned to the right, facing the viewer. John Ryland is wearing a simple clerical robe with a mop and a broad allonge wig. In his left hand, he holds a book titled “Witsii Oeconomia,” which he has placed in front of his chest. The composition combines simple dignity with an intellectual air and highlights Ryland as a scholar and theologian.
