J. PUNT (1711–1779), *The Wolves and the Sheep*, 1761, etching Jan Punt (1711–1779): The Wolves and the Sheep The Wolves and the Sheep, Fable IV, Plate 2, 1761, Etching Technique: Etching on paper Print Quality: An absolutely superb, harmonious print, with delicate, clear details and a clearly legible line structure. Inscription: Signed in the lower left of the printing plate: “J. Punt del. et sculps.” At the bottom of the printing plate: “LES LOUPS ET LES BREBIS. Fable IV. 2e Planche.” Date: 1761 Description: A rectangular, framed print depicts several wolves near sheep they have killed in a wooded landscape. In the foreground, a wolf is seizing an animal lying on the ground; on the left, another is dragging its prey, while in the middle ground a third appears between tree trunks. Tall, densely leafy trees create a sense of depth, and a bright view into the distance opens up the background. The scene is depicted without any human figures, emphasizing violence and the instinct to hunt. Delicate, closely spaced lines and hatching render the fur, bark, and earth; horizontal layers of strokes lend a sense of calm to the sky. The figures and background are clearly distinguished through contrasts.
