At the lower part inscribed in the printing plate: "I. de Castro Sarmento, M.D.". Date: 18th century Description: Portrait of the physician and scholar Jacob de Castro Sarmento, shown seated in three-quarter profile to the left. With his right hand, he guides a pen over the open manuscript, while his left hand gestures towards the viewer. Dressed in a velvet skirt and lace cuffs as well as a voluminous white wig, Sarmento looks directly out of the picture field.
