A. MARCENAY DE GHUY (*1722) after PARROCEL (*1646), A mounted battle scene, 1755, etching Antoine de Marcenay de Ghuy (1722, Arnay-le-Duc – 1811, Paris) after Joseph Parrocel (1646 – 1704 ): Equestrian battle scene: Dramatic battle in the forest featuring horsemen and soldiers, 1755, etching Technique: Etching on paper Inscription: Signed in the lower part of the printing plate: "Parocel pater p.t / A. de Marcenay sc.bat." Numbered in the lower right of the printing plate: "No. 13." Dated in the lower right: "1755." Date: 1755 Description: The artwork depicts a dynamic battle scene set in a forest landscape. In the center, a warrior rides a rearing horse, his sword raised and his cape billowing dramatically in the wind. At his feet, other soldiers are fighting—some on horseback, some fallen to the ground. The composition is dense and dramatic, with strong lines and hatching that convey movement and energy. Light and shadow are sharply contrasted, emphasizing the three-dimensional effect of the figures. A fortified structure can be seen in the background, which could indicate a historical battle. The trees on the left frame the scene and heighten the dramatic tension.
