M. GEWIN (1900–1976), Urban Facades with a Bridge, 1919, Pencil Marinus Ursul Maria Gewin (1900, Obermenzing near Munich – 1976, Obermenzing): Abstract depiction of urban façades with an implied bridge and geometric lines, 1919, pencil Technique: Pencil on paper Inscription: Dated lower left: “Okt 1919,” signed lower right: “M. U. M. Gewin.” Date: 1919 Description: Son of the Dutch architect Johann Christoph Gewin (born 1869). Born on August 27, 1900, in Obermenzing near Munich, M. U. M. Gewin spent his childhood in Germany. The Institut für Stadtgeschichte in Frankfurt lists addresses in Frankfurt, Wiesbaden, Munich, and Darmstadt. The artistic works presented here date from 1918 onward, primarily from 1919 to 1921. They incorporate architectural ideas, clearly influenced by de Stijl during a trip to the Netherlands around 1920. He went on to study architecture in Darmstadt; the date of his final diploma examination is given as May 25, 1925. He combined his professional career with freelance artistic work, which was presented to the wider public in an illustrated book published in 1933 with the playful title of a journey to the East: “Ostermanns fahren nach Moskau” (Ostermann’s Journey to Moscow), published by Boltze, Karlsruhe. Numerous examples of Gewin’s work can be documented from the postwar period, primarily ink drawings and watercolors from Spain, France, and North America. An exhibition at the Akzisehaus Osnabrück in 1975 provided insight into his late work, accompanied by a catalog titled *MUM Gewin: Watercolors and Drawings from the South of France*. The works from the estate presented here stand in contrast to the shift toward a new, decorative art style of the period around 1920.
