M. GEWIN (1900-1976), Harbor with boats and waves, Pencil Marinus Ursul Maria Gewin (1900 Obermenzing near Munich - 1976 Obermenzing): Detailed view of a harbour with stylized waves and docked boats, 20th century, Pencil Technique: Pencil and Colored pencil on Paper Inscription: Lower right with blindstamp. Date: 20th century Description: Son of the Dutch architect Johann Christoph Gewin (born 1869). Born on August 27, 1900 in Obermenzing near Munich, M. U. M. Gewin spent his childhood in Germany. The Institut für Stadtgeschichte, Frankfurt, lists addresses in Frankfurt, Wiesbaden, Munich and Darmstadt. He went on to study architecture in Darmstadt; the date of his main diploma examination is given as 25 May 1925. His profession was accompanied by freelance artistic work, presented to the wider public in an illustrated book, published in 1933 with the playful title of a journey to the East: "Ostermanns fahren nach Moskau" (Ostermann's journey to Moscow), published by Boltze, Karlsruhe. Numerous encounters with Gewin's works can be recorded for the post-war period, above all ink drawings and watercolors from Spain, France and North America. An exhibition at the Akzisehaus Osnabrück in 1975 provided an insight into his late work, with a catalogue: MUM Gewin, Watercolours and Drawings from the South of France. The works from the estate presented here are to be contrasted with the departure towards a new and decorative art of the period around 1920. Keywords: harbour; boats; water; waves; boat hull; port; ship; reflection; coastal motif; water movement; lines; colour accents; calm scene; maritime depiction; structure; movement; perspective; detail detail; stylized waves; shore area Size: Paper: 31,0 cm x 21,8 cm (12,2 x 8,6 in) Condition: Very good condition. The work shows even color retention without major discolouration. The paper shows slight signs of age in the form of minimal toning. There are no recognizable tears, stains or restorations. The contours are clear and undamaged.
