RONDAHL (1858–1914), Guardsman with a Pike, around 1880, Pencil Emmery Rondahl (1858, Vordingborg – 1914, Copenhagen): Guardsman with a pike, c. 1880, pencil Technique: Pencil on paper Date: c. 1880 Description: Full-length depiction of a standing soldier in 16th- and 17th-century armor and weaponry. The face is only vaguely visible. The drawing is part of a collection of historical and saga illustrations featuring Nordic scenes and themes by the Danish artist Rondahl, who made a name for himself particularly as a draftsman. He provided the illustrations for numerous historical, archaeological, and literary works. Partially faintly discolored along the edges and slightly creased in places.
