RONDAHL (1858–1914), A Scene from the Thirty Years’ War, 1888, pen drawing Emmery Rondahl (1858, Vordingborg – 1914, Copenhagen): Historical Scene from the Thirty Years’ War, 1888, pen drawing Technique: Pen drawing over pencil on paper Inscription: On the reverse is a pencil sketch for a poster for “Den Nordiske Industri Landbrugs og Kunndstilling Kobenhavn 1888.” Date: 1888 Description: A historical scene in the streets of a village. While roughly sketched soldiers are depicted on the sides, the artist shows two officers in 17th-century uniforms striding in the foreground. Perhaps the bearded man is Christian IV of Denmark and Norway. The drawing is part of a collection of historical and saga illustrations featuring Nordic scenes and themes by the Danish artist Rondahl, who made a name for himself particularly as a draftsman. He provided the illustrations for numerous historical, archaeological, and literary works.
