C. EBERT (1821–1885), River floodplain near Pähl, Pencil Carl Ebert (1821 Stuttgart – 1885 Munich): River floodplain near Pähl with a floodplain island and dense floodplain forest, 19th century, Pencil Technique: White-highlighted pencil on paper Inscription: Signed “C. Ebert” in the lower left. Inscribed “bei Pähl” at the bottom. Date: 19th century Description: After studying at the classically influenced art academy in Stuttgart, Ebert moved to Munich in 1846 to join the circle of landscape painters around Eduard Schleich. In 1851, he traveled to Paris with Schleich and his artist friend Carl Spitzweg. His stay there and his encounter with the Barbizon group of artists would fundamentally change his view of landscape painting. Schleich’s painting was influenced by his great teachers and role models Christian Morgenstern and Carl Rottmann, whose idealized interpretation of nature was strongly influenced by Romanticism. Some of his landscapes seem frozen by the atmospheric lighting and the carefully composed natural elements. In this small sketch, Ebert completely breaks free from this conception of the landscape. He discovers the charm of the unassuming motif and establishes an almost intimate relationship with it. It is a landscape near Pähl between Lake Ammersee and Lake Starnberg, a frequent destination for Munich artists on excursions. But it could be anywhere; Ebert does not provide a specific definition of the place here. The lines are free; the light is not confined to a fixed location. Nature is in motion; it is alive. It is his ode to plein air painting, which would soon revolutionize the classical system of academic training. Keywords: River landscape, floodplain forest, Bavaria, Ammersee, 19th century, Modern, Landscape, Germany, Pähl (Bavaria), Size: Paper: 7.9 cm x 11.6 cm (3.1 x 4.6 in) Condition: Good condition. There are small stains on the edge, but these do not detract from the image.
