E. BRETENIÈRES (*1804), Inn near Amsteg on the Gotthard Pass, 1835, Pencil Edmond de Bretenières (1804 Dijon - 1882 ibid.): Inn near Amsteg on the Gotthard Pass in the canton of Uri, Journey to Switzerland, Sketchbook, 1835, Pencil Technique: Pencil on Paper Date: 1835 Description: From a scrapbook with travel sketches by the artist. "Esquisses faites par le Baron Edmond de Bretenières feudant les voyages en Suisse" (Sketches made by Baron Edmond de Bretenieres during his travels in Switzerland). The drawing shows a rural building in an alpine landscape. The two-storey house, probably a farmhouse, is made of wood and stone, with a distinctive pitched roof and several windows. A staircase leads to a small balcony on the first floor. The surrounding area is lined with trees, and there are some logs in the foreground, emphasizing the rural and artisanal feel. A person can be recognized near a path, adding narrative depth to the scene. The composition is balanced, with clean lines that emphasize the structure and texture of the natural and architectural elements. The lighting conditions are even, without dramatic shadows, creating a calm atmosphere.
