After GREUZE (*1725), Study of a Lady’s Head Wearing a Bonnet, c. 1750, Charcoal After Jean-Baptiste Greuze (1725 Tournus – 1805 Paris): Study of a Lady’s Head Wearing a Bonnet, c. 1750, charcoal Technique: White-highlighted charcoal on paper Date: c. 1750 Description: The depiction is modeled after Jean-Baptiste Greuze’s Head Portrait of a Sleeping Woman. As in this portrait, Greuze depicted his wife at the moment of sleep with her mouth slightly open, her eyes closed, and her curls spilling out from under her bonnet. In our portrait, as in Greuze’s, the facial features are soft and finely drawn, while the dress and the background are rendered with bold, free strokes. Keywords: Study, Lady, Woman, Old Master, 18th century, Classicism, Portraits, France, Size: Paper: 34.4 cm x 25.8 cm (13.5 x 10.2 in) Condition: Good condition. The sheet has discolored with age. There is damage and tears to the paper in the lower left and upper right corners.
