Eduard Ansen-Hoffman (German, 1820-1904) A Satyr and Two Bacchantes oil on canvas signed E. Ansen (lower left) 35 1/2 x 49 in. (90.2 x 124.5 cm) Property from an Esteemed Private Collector, Barrington Hills, Illinois This lot is located in Chicago. Frames: 46 x 60 in. Canvas is unlined, with slight buckling to all corners. Moderate deposits of surface dirt and dust. An approximately 3 1/4 in. scuff mark with associated pinpoint paint losses in the lower center, within the robe of the central figure. One small paint loss along the lower center edge, as well as one pinpoint paint loss in the lower right corner, within the satyr's hip. Paint application is very thin in areas, but this appears to be inherent to the artwork. Under UV light: the darker blues in the sky fluoresce, but this may be inherent to the pigments used. Scattered inpainting along all edges, with a larger area of inpainting in the lower right corner, approximately 1 x 1 in. Additional larger spots of inpainting in the upper left and upper center of the sky, as well as to the hands, left forearm, and flute of the leftmost figure. A few small dots of inpainting within the faces of all figures, and several slightly larger areas within their bodies and robes, including along the upper hair edge of the center figure to the edge of the left shoulder of the rightmost figures. Additional images available upon request.
