Paul Emile Antony MORLON, known as Antoine MORLON (1834–1913) The Stranger in Paris & The Stranger’s Guide, 1862 Pair of oil-on-canvas paintings. One signed and dated “62” in the lower left corner; the other signed in the lower right corner. H_47 cm W_36.5 cm (Very minor restorations). These two compositions, conceived as a pair, were popularized thanks to a 1862 lithographic print produced by Antoine Morlon with the assistance of Claude Régnier and Joseph Bettannier. The expressiveness of the man’s face is reminiscent of the work of the portraitist Joseph Ducreux. Antoine Morlon is known for his seascapes as well as his genre scenes depicting 19th-century Parisian life. He exhibited at the Salon and the World’s Fair and won several medals. Some of his paintings were even acquired during his lifetime by the City of Paris and by certain French museums. Expert: Artéon Expert: Quentin BONNEFOY - Artéon
