Jean Baptiste GREUZE (1725–1805), follower of Oil on canvas. Portrait of a Young Girl Wearing a Bonnet H_41.5 cm W_33 cm Damage and relining. Jean-Baptiste Greuze ranks among the most important painters of the French Enlightenment. He contributed to the renewal of genre painting by placing central emphasis on scenes of daily life, family relationships, and the expression of emotions. His compositions, often designed to evoke emotion in the viewer, depict moral values, domestic virtues, and emotional bonds, in keeping with the philosophical and social concerns of his time. The dissemination of his works through engravings contributed significantly to his fame. His iconographic repertoire thus became a lasting source of inspiration for many painters, who copied his compositions, reused his figures, or offered interpretations adapted to the tastes of subsequent generations, particularly in the 18th and 19th centuries.
