Exceptional and significant Aubusson rug France. Napoleon III period. Needlework Tapestry technique Wool threads on a cotton foundation Unlined rug H_ 400 cm L_ 380 cm A few small stains (cleaning will improve appearance) A few small, well-executed restorations Remarkably fresh colors In excellent condition Description: This rug features a spectacular and opulent design, typical of the national manufactory’s productions during the Second Empire. Main field: a powerful brick-red, wine-colored background surrounding the large, light beige (ivory) central medallion, which is polylobed and dynamic in shape, adorned with a bouquet of polychrome flowers and foliage, surrounded by a scattering of flowered wreaths. Borders and spandrels: The entire design is encircled by a wide, architectural border, punctuated by imposing stylized acanthus scrolls in antique gold, rendered in shades of beige, gold, and brown, creating a three-dimensional effect and a trompe-l’œil frame. A triple outer braid in gradient tones completes the composition. This is a unique, extraordinary piece and a perfect example of the Napoleon III style, characterized by eclecticism: the tapestry reinterprets the decorative repertoire of the Louis XV style (rocaille forms, asymmetrical cartouches) and the Louis XXI style (realistic floral garlands), while embracing the era’s taste for bold color contrasts.
