Nicolas MALINCONICO (1663–1727), attributed to Saint John of Capistrano Leading the Christians into the Battle of Belgrade Against the Ottomans Ink on paper. H_36.5 x W_25 cm Scattered stains. Inscription: “Bozzetto di giord° / eseguito da' malinconico / in S. Spirito.” Nicola Malinconico was an Italian Baroque painter known for his numerous religious compositions and a few still lifes. A native of Naples, he trained under Luca Giordano and had the privilege of completing his master’s unfinished commissions after the latter’s departure for Spain. He was commissioned to work for numerous churches throughout Italy. Our sheet is likely a preparatory sketch for the decoration of the Church of Santo Spirito di Palazzo in Naples—demolished during the construction of the current Piazza del Plebiscito—or for the Church of the Spirito Santo in Sant’Antimo, not far from the city of Naples. Many institutions today hold works by him: the Pinacoteca di Brera in Milan, the Capodimonte Museum, the Palazzo Pretorio Museum, the Gallery of the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples, and the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna.
