[VION D'ALIBRAY, Charles de]. *L'Arbre triste*. *Métamorphose*. Paris, Toussaint Quinet, 1640. In-8 (21.5 x 16 cm), Bradel-style cardboard binding. Modern binding, endpapers replaced. 14 pp. First edition of this play attributed to the libertine poet Charles de Vion d'Albray. Born around 1600 and died around 1650, this former soldier devoted himself to poetry. A friend of Saint-Amant, Faret, and other wine-drinking poets of his time, he was the author of gallant and bacchanalian plays. In this fable, the character Parisate is transformed into a tree by the goddess Diana to protect her from Apollo’s romantic pursuits and advances. The text of this play was included in 1653 in the author’s *Poetic Works*, under the section “Heroic Verses.”
