VERNE, Jules, and RIOU. The Voyages and Adventures of Captain Hatteras. [Custom-bound in "Au cercle pur"]. Paris, J. Hetzel, 1867. In-8 (26.5 x 18 cm), Custom hardcover, publisher’s blue percaline, gold vignette on the front cover accompanied by the title and name of the collection. Gilded edges. Decorated spine. Plain back cover. 467 pp. Condition: spine re-glued, hinges restored. Scuff marks. Illustrated first edition of “The Travels and Adventures of Captain Hatteras” in its extremely rare personalized blue percaline cloth binding known as “Au cercle pur.” The illustration on the front cover reproduces the vignette from the half-title page, depicting a ship amid the ice. The binding is unsigned, but the maker is Magnier. Only four volumes were published with a personalized plate: 1. 1867. *The Voyages and Adventures of Captain Hatteras*; 2. 1867. *Five Weeks in a Balloon* followed by *Journey to the Center of the Earth*; 3. 1868. *The Children of Captain Grant* (the first of three triple-volume sets); 4. 1871. *Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea*. Note this beautiful blue color, which is very rare for this title in its first hardcover edition.
