VEBER, Pierre & Jean. *La joviale comédie*. Paris, H. Simonis Empis, 1896. In-8 (28 x 19 cm), paperback, color-illustrated cover. Split spine, fragile volume. First edition on plain paper (following the 20 “Japon” and 10 “Chine” editions). A work by the Veber brothers: Pierre, a journalist and playwright, and Jean, a caricaturist and painter, who contributed to “L’assiette au beurre” and “Le Rire.” In this work, they take a highly satirical look at late 19th-century society. Numerous illustrations by both authors. The spectacular color cover depicts a descent into hell under the watchful eye of two caryatids guarding the gate, who represent the Veber brothers. A rare and valuable copy, enhanced by an autographed dedication page from Pierre Veber to the journalist and historian Edmond Lepelletier (1846–1913).
