ROUSSEAU, Jean-Jacques. *Emile, or On Education*. Amsterdam [i.e., Paris], Jean Néaulme, 1762. In-12 (16.5 x 10 cm), marbled tan calfskin, smooth spine decorated with panels. Gold fillets framing the covers. Marbled edges. 4 vols.: viii-(2)-466 pp. - 407 pp. - 381 pp. - 455 pp.; 5 plates. Slight rubbing; paper slightly yellowed. Provenance: Gabriel Archinard’s library (ex-libris) One of the many counterfeit editions published the same year as the original edition, illustrated with 5 plates by Eisen, engraved by Le Grand, Longueil, and Pasquier. *Emile* was first printed in Paris by Duchêne based on Rousseau’s manuscript. Rousseau, counting on Malesherbes’ protection, had decided to have it printed in France. Its condemnation by Parliament led to the seizure of the copies, which were burned in the courtyard of the Palace. This event marked the beginning of the author’s nomadic and anguished life. “Praised by some, fiercely criticized by others, and condemned by civil and religious authorities upon its publication, *Emile* set all of Europe ablaze. The German (1762) and English (1763) translations helped spread Rousseau’s educational principles, which had a lasting effect on the education of children.” (Béatrice Mairé). A very fine copy.
