PELADAN, Joséphin. *La Prométhéide*, a trilogy by Aeschylus in four acts. Paris, Chamuel, 1895. In-8 (22 x 18 cm), green half-shagreen, Bradel binding, smooth spine with gilt decoration. Gilded head. Period binding. Covers preserved, spine missing. xiii-(1)-163 pp. Spine faded, normal wear and tear. Yellowed printing paper. First edition of “La Prométhéide,” a trilogy by Aeschylus reconstructed by the writer and occultist Joséphin Peladan (known as “Sar Péladan”) for the Théâtre de la Rose-Croix, of which he was the founder. Peladan dreamed of restoring the theater to its ancient function as a drama of initiation, the most remarkable example of which, in his view, was the “Eleusinian Mysteries.” Some of his plays were accompanied by music by Erik Satie. This short-lived avant-garde theater saw the publication and staging of several esoteric plays and tragedies: *Babylon* (1895), *The Son of the Stars* (1895), *The Prometheide* (1895), *The Prince of Byzantium* (1896), *Semiramis* (1897)... Complete with the frontispiece portrait in heliogravure. A rare and valuable copy, enhanced by a dedication from the author on the front cover (preserved).
