PASCAL, Blaise. *Les Provinciales, or Letters Written by Louis de Montalte*. Clermont, Auvergne, Published by the Lefranc Brothers, 1756. in-12 (14 x 8.5 cm), full red morocco, smooth spine decorated with panels. Gilded edges. Contemporary binding. VIII-448 pp. A few pinholes. A rare Clermont edition of *Les Provinciales*, of particular interest to bibliophiles, as Pascal himself was a native of Clermont. During a period of debate between Jansenists and Jesuits within the Catholic Church, Blaise Pascal wrote *Les Provinciales*, a collection of 18 partly fictional letters (published between January 1656 and March 1657). Their initial purpose was to defend the Jansenist theologian Antoine Arnaud, who was threatened with condemnation by the Sorbonne, before shifting toward a critique of the Society of Jesus and certain of its particularly lax casuistic members. A very fine copy in a luxurious contemporary red morocco binding.
