MORERI, Louis. *Le Grand dictionnaire historique*. Paris, Jean-Baptiste Coignard Fils, 1732. Folio (39 x 25 cm), full brown calfskin, covers and spine decorated with a coat of arms (unidentified), red speckled edges. 6 vols.: XII-986 pp. - 1059 pp. - 1008 pp. - 1060 pp. - 419-631 pp. - 652-252 pp. Some scuffing, a few foxing spots, and sun-faded pages. A remarkable, complete copy in 10 folio volumes of the famous Dictionnaire Moreri, bound in period full calf with unidentified coats of arms. Includes the revised, corrected, and expanded 1732 edition in 6 volumes. Complete with the frontispiece engraved by Claude Duflos after Desmarets and the portrait of the author, also engraved by Duflos. Text adorned with headpieces and historiated initials. Title pages in red and black. This encyclopedia, particularly rich in geographical and historical content, sparked an immediate craze throughout Europe, and its success lasted for nearly the entire century following its publication, leading to numerous reprints. The literary success of this dictionary is attested not only by the twenty editions published between 1674 and 1759, but also by the great acclaim it received over the course of two centuries: Victor Hugo frequently used it for the historical details featured in his novels. Moréri’s dictionary remains useful even today as the foremost collection of biographical entries, particularly regarding the history and thought of 16th-century Europe. Its main strength lies in its encyclopedic approach to topics as diverse as history, geography, genealogy, and religion. A fine copy, bound with the coat of arms at the time.
