MONTAIGNE, Michel de, and QUERLON, Anne-Gabriel Meunier de. Journal of Michel de Montaigne’s Journey to Italy via Switzerland and Germany. Rome & Paris, Le Jay, 1774. in-4 (28 x 20.5 cm), fawn calfskin, ribbed spine decorated with panels. Red edges. Contemporary binding. LIV-416 pp. Scuffs and scratches on the covers. First edition in quarto format, containing a beautiful frontispiece portrait of Montaigne engraved by Augustin de Saint-Aubin. The original manuscript of the *Journal of the Journey to Italy* was forgotten for nearly two centuries and was not rediscovered by Abbé Prunis until 1770. The Parisian publisher Le Jay entrusted the task of editing it to Anne-Gabriel Meunier de Querlon, curator of manuscripts at the Bibliothèque du Roi. The *Journal of the Journey to Italy*, written in French and Italian, was kept during the trip Montaigne undertook shortly after the first edition of the *Essays*. The text is therefore replete with serious passages, including numerous personal details and accounts of his illness. A very beautiful volume with pristine interior pages.
