MILLER, Philippe. Gardeners’ Dictionary. Paris, Guillot, 1785. In-4 (26 x 19 cm), marbled calfskin, ribbed spine decorated with panels. Red edges. Period binding. 8 uncollated volumes. Separate plates. Scuffs; some cap pages missing. First French edition, translated from the eighth edition of the famous "Gardeners' Dictionary" by Philippe Miller (1691–1771), gardener to the Chelsea Apothecaries’ Company and member of the Florentine Academy of Botany. A dictionary-style work containing methods for improving vegetable, fruit, and flower gardens as well as nurseries, and new ways to preserve wine... This edition has been notably expanded by Laurent Marie Chazelles de Prisy with plants unknown to Miller, and by the naturalist François Holandre with notes on physics and materia medica. At the end of the final volume, in a separately paginated section, is the “Catalog of Trees & Shrubs,” the “French & Latin Catalog of Plants Contained in the Gardeners’ Dictionary,” the “Table of English Names,” the “Index of Latin Names,” and the “Gardeners’ Calendar” by Miller, translated from the sixteenth English edition. A two-volume supplement was published in 1790. A fine copy.
