[LEROY, Antoine]. *Le Momus Français, or The Amusing Adventures of the Duke of Roquelaure*. Cologne, Pierre Marteau, 1759. In-12 (14 x 8 cm), red half-maroquin with corner pieces, ribbed spine. Gilded head edge. 19th-century binding. 171 pp. Yellowed paper. A new edition of this great classic of satirical literature, an anonymous work attributed to Antoine Le Roy by Barbier. The book features a real-life character: Gaston-Jean-Baptiste, Duke of Roquelaure (1656–1738), who was a famous courtier during the reigns of Louis XIV and Louis XV. Roquelaure was renowned at court for his extreme ugliness, but above all for his sharp wit, his indecent jokes, and his legendary witticisms. King Louis XIV held him in high esteem; he was one of the king’s favorites, and one day when the Duchess of Burgundy criticized him, he replied, “I find him one of the most handsome men in the Kingdom, for he is one of the bravest.” The novel pokes fun at the Duke’s ugliness and recounts his pranks and adventures at court in a picaresque style, making for a highly amusing tale. A fine copy bound in a delicate 19th-century half-red morocco binding with corner pieces.
