LA FAYETTE, Countess of. Memoirs of the French Court, for the Years 1688 & 1689. Amsterdam, Jean-Frederic Bernard, 1731. In-12 (16 x 9 cm), contemporary brown calfskin, ribbed spine decorated with panels. Gold roulette-cut edges, red edges. 234 pp. A few rare pinholes. First edition and first printing, characterized by the title medallion bearing Picart’s signature and the first page of the Preface consisting of 19 lines rather than 17 as in the second printing. Frontispiece by Bernard Picart, engraved by Buisson. As the preface states, Madame de La Fayette had been writing memoirs since her youth, but the manuscripts were lost, and only these few excerpts remain. These historical memoirs, published posthumously, deal with the internal and external affairs of the Kingdom of France; the style is lively and incisive, blending more personal chronicles with the major events of the kingdom. A very fine copy of the first edition.
