[GAUTHIER, François-Louis]. Traité contre les danses et les mauvaises chansons. Pleasant copy of this rare and curious "theological treatise" by Abbé Gauthier (1696-1780) against dancing and bawdy songs. Paris, Antoine Boudet, 1775. In-12, brown marbled calf, spine ribbed, fleurons in a double gilded frame on the entrenerfs, gilded title on brown leather, guilloche-covered edges, mottled edges. Contemporary binding. LX, 426 pp. and 3 ff. (approbation, privilege, bookseller's catalog), bands, lettrines and culs-de-lampe. Rubbing, corners slightly bent. Second edition, revised by Rondet, of this treatise by Abbé Gauthier (1696-1780), which attempts to demonstrate the harmful influence of bawdy dances and songs based on the Holy Scriptures. A fine copy of this singular testimony to the obscurantism of the Age of Enlightenment.
