GACON, François. The Odes of Anacreon and Sappho in French Verse. Rotterdam, Fritsch and Böhm, 1712. in-12 (14 x 9 cm), tan calfskin, ribbed spine decorated with panels. 354 pp., frontispiece. Slight scuffing; pages trimmed short at the margins. A beautiful, well-preserved edition adorned with a stunning allegorical frontispiece engraved in intaglio by Bernards after B. Picart. The work is preceded by a very long preface, followed by the Odes presented in their Greek text and French translation, accompanied by a commentary by “the Unvarnished Poet.” Born in Lyon, François Gacon (1667–1725), known as “the Poet Without Pretense,” is famous for his satires against Jean-Baptiste Rousseau, Houdar de La Motte, Boileau, Bossuet, and the young Voltaire. A pleasant copy.
