DULAURE, Jacques-Antoine. A Physical, Civil, and Moral History of Paris. Brussels, H. Tarlier, 1825. 8vo (20.5 x 13 cm), mottled sheepskin, smooth spine with decorative lettering. Gold-tooled border on the covers. Marbled edges. Period binding. 10 vols. (of 10) uncollated, numerous separate engravings; the title page lists 85 engravings. Slight scuffing on the bindings, a few damaged caps, some foxing. Fourth revised and expanded edition, “illustrated with 85 engravings.” The original was published in 7 volumes in 1821–1822. The Civil, Physical, and Moral History of Paris is a fascinating compendium on the history of the capital. Of course, this view of its evolution over the centuries reflects the spirit of its time, but it remains a valuable source of information. After providing some basic physical statistics, Dulaure chronologically unfolds the history of Paris: The Origins of the Parisian Nation; Paris under Roman Rule; Paris under the First Dynasty of Frankish Kings; Paris under the Second Dynasty; Paris from Hugh Capet to Philip Augustus; Paris under Louis VII, known as “the Young,” Paris from the reign of Louis VII to that of Louis IX, Paris from Louis IX to Philip IV, known as “the Fair,” Paris from the reign of Philip III to that of Charles V, Paris from the reign of King John to that of Francis I, Paris from the reign of Louis XII to the government of the League, Paris from the origins of the League to the reign of Louis XIII, Paris under Louis XIII, Paris under Louis XIV, Paris under Louis XV, Paris under Louis XVI, Paris under the Convention, Paris under the Directory and the Two Councils, Paris under Napoleon Bonaparte… But this traditional chronology allows the author to incorporate the many events that occurred over the centuries and to provide extensive information on daily life, the , the functioning of the municipality, the evolution of the city’s boundaries, various buildings, churches and religious authority, royal authority… A fine copy in a period binding.
