DELECLUZE, Etienne-Jean. Louis David, His School, and His Time: Memoirs. Paris, Didier, 1855. In-8 (17 x 11.5 cm), full red shagreen, decorated spine, gilt fillets framing the leather on the covers. Gilded edges. 452 pp. Slight, insignificant marginal foxing. First edition. Important memoirs on the leading figure of Neoclassicism, Jacques-Louis David, published by his student, Etienne-Jean Delécluze. This copy is enhanced by an autograph dedication signed by Delécluze: “To Mr. and Mrs. Brinquant, a token of friendship from the author…”. Delécluze joined David’s studio just as David was preparing *The Sabine Women*; he initially intended to pursue history painting but later turned to literature and became a critic for the *Journal des Débats*. His memoirs paint a valuable picture of the studio: the master’s remarks, correction sessions, conversations with Gros or Girodet… A fine copy in a lovely period binding, inscribed by David’s student.
