DEGOUSEE, Joseph, and LAURENT, Charles. *Guide for the Sounder, or a Theoretical and Practical Treatise on Soundings*. Paris, Garnier Frères, 1861. In-8 (19 x 13.5 cm), half-percale, title and volume numbers gilt. Contemporary binding. 3 vols.: XII-491 pp. - 532 pp. + atlas (60 plates) Spines faded. Waterstains on the text volumes. Second edition, greatly expanded compared to the original 1847 edition, of this comprehensive manual for surveyors. In addition to the two text volumes, there is an atlas of 60 plates (compared to 34 in the 1847 edition), illustrated with numerous figures depicting sounding instruments and geological cross-sections. Having become a civil engineer after his discharge from the army (1815), Degousée specialized in the manufacture of sounding equipment and in sounding operations for the drilling of artesian wells. The innovations he introduced to this technology, detailed in a reference work (Guide du sondeur, or Traité théorique et pratique des sondages, 2 vols., Paris, Langlois and Leclercq, 1847, reprinted in 1861), earned him numerous awards at national industrial exhibitions and world’s fairs. In particular, he received gold medals from the Society for the Encouragement of National Industry (1830), the Royal and Central Society of Agriculture (1831 and 1835), and the Academy of Sciences (1835). A fine copy, complete with its atlas (60 plates) in uniform bindings.
