[CURIOSA]. [LÉTORIÈRE, Marquis de]. *L'Année galante; or the Secret Intrigues of the Marquis de L****. London and Paris, Rue and Hôtel Serpente, 1786. In-16 (13 x 8 cm), half-glazed calfskin, ribbed spine decorated with grotesque motifs. 19th-century binding. Paper slightly yellowed. Rare first edition. An anonymous text that paints a portrait of a man living off women, recounting his various fortunes month by month. The author, Louis-Armand Prévost Létorière, an officer in the Guards at Versailles, “was regarded in certain circles as the most capable man of his time” (Gay), surely in reference to his “achievements.” A beautiful copy preserved in a fine 19th-century binding.
