[COYER, Gabriel-François] and [PALISSOT DE MONTENOY, Charles]. Discourse on the Satire Against the Philosophers... [with] The Philosophers. Athens [Paris], published by the Anti-Philosopher Bookseller, 1760. In-12 (17 x 9.5 cm), contemporary granite-brown calfskin, gilt fillet on the covers, ribbed spine decorated with fillets. 91-(3)-91 pp. Stains on the top cover. Interior slightly yellowed. First edition of the “Discourse on the Satire Against the Philosophers,” a pamphlet published in 1760 by Abbé Gabriel-François Coyer. Bound together with it is Palissot’s play: “Les Philosophes” (without a title page). In 1760, the play “Les Philosophes” was staged—a scathing comedy (attributed to Charles Palissot de Montenoy) that attacked the leading figures of the Enlightenment. In this context, Abbé Gabriel-François Coyer published his “Discourse on the Satire Against the Philosophers” that same year, a text that took part in the bitter ideological disputes between the philosophers and their detractors of the time.
