CHAUVEAU, Pierre-Joseph-Olivier. Life of Charles-Melchior-Artus, Marquis de Bonchamps, Vendée General. Paris: Published by Bleuet and Lenormant, 1817. In-8 (20 x 13 cm), 19th-century binding in brown half-basane, spine decorated with gilt metal tools, pasted-on title label. Spine faded, slight scuffing. First edition of one of the very first biographies of the Vendée general Charles Bonchamps (1760–1793), famous for having pardoned nearly 5,000 Republican soldiers following the Battle of Cholet (October 17, 1793). It was written by Pierre-Marie Chauveau, Doctor of Medicine. At the end of the volume, Chauveau includes twelve supporting documents, including official eyewitness accounts from Bonchamps’ former comrades-in-arms and his confessor, Abbé Martin. This work served as the immediate prelude to Louis XVIII’s approval of the erection of a commemorative monument. A fine copy, complete with the portrait of Bonchamps on the frontispiece.
