CERVANTES, Miguel de, and NOVILIERS CLAVEL, Guillaume-Alexandre (trans.). *Il Novelliere Castigliano*. In which, blending a serious style with a humorous one, curious events, strange occurrences, and remarkable happenings are recounted. An excellent mid-18th-century manuscript copy of the only Italian translation of these Exemplary Novels that remained in use until the 19th century. S.l. [Italy], 1745. 1 volume in-4, full vellum, smooth spine decorated with double horizontal fillets and gilt fleurons, vellum title label, blind-stamped fillet on the covers, blue speckled edges. 299 handwritten folios in black ink (237 x 165 mm), ruled and framed by a double line; each page contains 24 lines of cursive text, except for the last page, which has 7 lines. Beautiful title page and frontispiece depicting an ornamental cartouche supported by two cherubs. Spined spine; a few small stains on the covers; rubbed caps; lower corner of the front cover chipped; some foxing on the margins; rare ink stains. Small label pasted at the top of the spine. A handwritten copy dated 1745 of Guillaume-Alexandre Noviliers Clavel’s translation of Cervantes’s *Nouvelles Exemplaires*. Published in 1626, this is the first Italian edition and would remain the only one until the early 19th century. In this collection of 12 short stories, the Italian influence on the Spanish master’s narrative structure is particularly evident in the so-called “idealistic” stories. This may explain the interest that led our copyist to reproduce this translation. A beautiful bookplate printed by Devambez for the Chilean writer Karlos Newman, an advocate of “ortografía rrazional,” a reform based on the spoken language; Bookplate by John Grover bearing the motto “Le Roy, la Loy, la Foy.” A very beautiful travel manuscript.
