[AFRICA]. STANLEY, Henri M. How I Found Livingstone. Paris, Hachette et Cie, 1874. In-8 (23.5 x 16 cm), half-shagreen, decorated spine, gilt edges. 600 pp.; engravings in the text and as inserts, maps, most of which are fold-outs. Slight foxing; map inserts faded from sunlight. First edition of the French translation. Stanley recounts his journey in search of the explorer David Livingstone, who had disappeared into the African interior. He was ordered to travel to the Lake Tanganyika region to find Livingstone, who had not been heard from for several years. The objective is to find Livingstone, dead or alive, and to bring back information about his discoveries. After months of searching, Stanley finally encounters Livingstone in 1871 at Ujiji, on the shores of Lake Tanganyika, uttering the famous phrase: “Dr. Livingstone, I presume?” The book is illustrated with 60 engravings and 6 maps. A beautiful copy in period binding, a great classic of 19th-century exploratory travel.
