François I Dumont Portrait of the Duke of Reichstadt, gouache on ivory, 14 x 11 cm Signed “Dumont” lower left. Miniature depicting Napoleon Francis Joseph Charles Bonaparte (1811–1832), son of Napoleon I and Marie Louise of Austria, known as the King of Rome and, from 1818, the Duke of Reichstadt. The young prince is depicted in half-length portrait, with his arms crossed, wearing a white Austrian army uniform with a high gilded collar, a sash around his waist, and a saber at his side. On his chest he wears the insignia of knighthood, which underscore his rank at the Habsburg court. The figure, set against a uniform gray-blue background, is rendered with the meticulous detail and delicate color modulation characteristic of early 19th-century miniature painting. The work comes with a CITES certificate. Framed.
