Large dish Made of pewter. Circular in shape. Rich molded decoration covers the entire piece, featuring, at the center, Adam and Eve, naked, in the Garden of Eden, with the serpent coiled around the Tree of Knowledge. They are accompanied at the bottom by Minerva and allegories of the liberal arts: astronomy, rhetoric (sic), music, grammar (sic), and arithmetic (sic). The rim depicts the twelve principal Roman emperors. These allegories are inspired by Etienne Delaune, a famous engraver and ornamental artist of the French Renaissance. The captions for the liberal arts, written in French, rule out a German origin for this model, as such captions were always written in Latin. No hallmark or countermark Workshop in Lyon or Franche-Comté, late 16th century D. 46.5 cm Damage, restoration, and significant oxidation. A suspension ring is soldered to the reverse. Ref.: “Les étains de la collection Riblent” by Robert Forrer. Strasbourg, 1905, which describes and reproduces an example of this model.
