Saint Martin of Tour and the Beggar Made of softwood (stripped) from a single log. A sculpture in the round depicting the saint perched on his mount, cutting his cloak in half to give it to a beggar. The base forms an oval mound with a central hole drilled through it. Traces of former polychromy. 17th century H. 38.5 cm - W. 29 cm SSE Damage and missing parts. Restorations (including the horse’s tail and the beggar’s left arm). On a cold evening in the French city of Amiens, Saint Martin encountered a freezing beggar and shared his cloak with him, cutting it in half. However, the cloak was part of a Roman soldier’s uniform, and half of it belonged to the emperor and half to the soldier. The saint thus gave away everything he had. That night, Christ appeared to him in a dream, wearing the shared piece of the cloak, thanking him for his gesture.
