Gunpowder container made from a pumpkin, 19th century 16 cm x 12 cm in diameter A flattened spherical shape, decorated with a burnished metal appliqué depicting the Sienese she-wolf; at the top, a small hole with a cork stopper surmounted by a crested helmet. Although the Sienese and Capitoline she-wolves both depict the iconic animal nursing the founding twins (Romulus and Remus for Rome, Senius and Aschius—sons of Remus—for Siena), both depictions differ in both legend and visual representation: the Sienese she-wolf gazes proudly forward, unlike the Capitoline she-wolf, whose head is turned sideways toward her cubs. The provenance of this specific artifact from a noble Sienese family suggests that it was created out of a desire to legitimize the city’s prestige, inextricably linking the local aristocratic identity to the glorious myth of its Roman origins.
